Maya World Archaeology

FOREWORD

"The region comprising the Mexican states of Campeche, Chiapas, Quintana Roo, Tabasco and Yucatan, and the Central American countries of Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, was home to one of the most important cultures of the ancient world - the Maya.

The Maya defies analysis: for every doubt resolved, new questions arise. As time goes on and specialists delve into its mysteries, new findings emerge that renew their enthusiasm for this endlessly fascinating people.

This book provides a general overview of the area known as the Maya World from its cultural background and origins to its decline. The author offers a summary of its scientific, astronomical, architectural and artistic achievements. He describes the major cities, and mentions their most important temples, palaces and pyramids. To facilitate the journey through the Maya World, explanations are given on a state-by-state, country-by-country basis.

Reference is made of the first explorers who not only paved the way for new generations of scholars but also for ordinary visitors since, thanks to them, we can appreciate the marvels of this culture as we walk the paths that the builders of these monumental cities trod thousands of years ago.

We hope that this book will encourage those who have already had the opportunity of visiting these cities to find out more about this marvelous people and inspire those who have not already done so to discover it for themselves. Fortunately, the Maya World is now accessible to all."
